Background of the Study
Hashtags have evolved into powerful linguistic tools that not only categorize content but also stimulate neologism formation. In Nigeria, Twitter trends are fertile grounds for the emergence of new words—hashtag neologisms—that encapsulate cultural, political, and social phenomena. This study examines how these neologisms are created and disseminated through hashtag movements. Nigerian users adopt and adapt hashtags to reflect current events, humor, and local identity, often coining terms that quickly enter everyday parlance (Nwachukwu, 2023). The research explores the processes of lexical innovation, including blending, abbreviation, and semantic shift, that occur within the dynamic digital landscape. By comparing different Twitter trends, the study identifies patterns in the creation and adoption of hashtag neologisms, providing insights into how digital activism and social commentary influence language change. This analysis contributes to our understanding of how new vocabulary emerges in response to the fast-paced and interactive environment of social media (Eze, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although hashtag neologisms are a noticeable phenomenon in Nigerian Twitter trends, there is limited systematic research on their formation and propagation. The rapid evolution of these new terms, coupled with the complexities of digital discourse, makes it challenging to document their linguistic and social impact. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of the role of hashtags in language innovation, necessitating focused research on the mechanisms behind hashtag neologisms (Oluwatobi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To identify and analyze hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends.
To examine the processes driving the creation of these neologisms.
To compare the adoption patterns of hashtag neologisms across different trends.
Research Questions
What are the characteristics of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends?
How are these neologisms formed and disseminated?
What factors influence the adoption of new hashtag terms?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a systematic analysis of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian social media. The findings will deepen our understanding of digital lexical innovation and its implications for language change, benefiting linguists, digital media scholars, and cultural theorists (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends and does not cover other social media platforms or non-hashtag-based language phenomena.
